【摘要】:ThisisareportoftheinitialinvestigationconductedbyUnderwriters'LaboratoriesInc.toestablishaprocedureforclassifyingadditionalflammablegasesorvaporswithinGroupsA,B,C,andDofClassIhazardouslocationsasdefinedbytheNationalElectricalCode.Thisprocedureprovidesameansofincreasingtheutilityofpresentlyrecognizedexplosion-proofelectricalequipmentwithoutthenecessityofadditionalexpensiveandlaborioustestingofsuchequipment.UsingatestfacilitydesignedandconstructedbyUnderwriter'sLaboratoriesInc.comparativeexperimentaldataonflamepropagationandexplosioneffects,withspecialreferencetoexplosion-proofelectricalequipment,havebeenobtainedforfifteenflammableandnonflammablegasesorvolatilechemicalmaterialsnetpreviouslyclassified.Featuresinvestigatedincludedthemaximumexplosionpressuredevelopedbytheparticulargas-orvapor-airmixtureunderpertinenttestconditions,andthewidthsandclearancesinmetal-to-metaljointsthatwillarrestflamepropagation.Theprimaryexplosionchamber,12inchininternaldiameterwithaninternalvolumeofonecubicfoot,isprovidedwithavariabletestjointassembly,meansforinducinginitialturbulenceinthetestmixturepriortoignition,andanoptional10-footsectionof1-1/2inchsizeconduitforstudiesofexplosionpressurepilingeffects.Toarriveattheproposedclassifications,theflamepropagationandexplosioneffectsofeachgasorvapor,togetherwithitsignitiontemperature,werecomparedwiththecorrespondingcharacteristicsofacetylene(GroupA),hydrogen(GroupB),diethylether(GroupC),andgasoline(GroupD)asdeterminedunderthesametestconditions.TheGroupclassificationofthesefourreferencematerialshaslongbeenestablishedwithinClassIhazardouslocations,andeachofthefourisconsideredrepresentativeoftheothergasesorvaporsclassedintherespectiveGroup.Onthebasisoftheresultsofthisinvestigation,fourteengasesorvaporshavebeenaddedtotheGroupclassificationswithinClassIhazardouslocationsasfollows:ClassI,GroupB-Butadiene,ethyleneoxide,andpropyleneoxide.ClassI,GroupC-Acetaldehyde,isoprene,andunsymmetricaldimethylhydrazine.ClassI,GroupD-Acrylonitrile,ammonia(anhydrous),ethylenedichloride,propylene,styrene,vinylacetate,vinylchloride,andpara-xylene.Carbondisulfide,thefifteenthmaterialinvestigatedwouldnotbeclassifiedinanyofthefourGroupsofClassIhazardouslocations.BecauseofitsIowignitiontemperatureandtheverycloseclearancesbetweensurfacesnecessarytoarrestitsflamepropagation,carbondisulfiderequiressafeguardsbeyondthoserequiredforanyofthepresentGroups.PartIIreportsonaninvestigationconductedbyUnderwritersLaboratoriesInc.toclassifyadditionalgasesorvaporswithinGroupsA,B,C,andDofClassIhazardouslocationsasdefinedbytheNationalElectricalCode,NFPANo.70-1975,ANSIC1-1975.
