【摘要】:ItisanticipatedthattheASTMSubcommitteesA01.02,A01.03,A01.06,A01.09,A01.11,A01.15,A01.19,A01.22,andA01.28willusethestandardcompositionlimitslistedinthisguideforthegradesidentifiedintheirproductspecificationsunlessthereisaspecifictechnicaljustificationfordoingotherwise.Thecompositionlimitsgiveninthisguidearetobeusedasguidesindetermininglimitsforeachoftheelementsincludedinthetotalcompositionofeachgrade.ThecompositionlimitshavebeenestablishedwiththeintentthateachASTMsubcommitteewillfinditnecessarytorequireonlyaminimumnumberofchangestoreflectspecifictechnicaleffects.Section5liststhegeneralguidelinesfollowedfordeterminingthelimitsforeachelement;thelimitsestablishedinthisguidearebasedupontheseguidelines.1.1ThisguidecoversASTMSubcommitteesA01.02,A01.03,A01.06,A01.09,A01.11,A01.15,A01.19,A01.22,andA01.28forspecifyingchemicalcompositionlimitsofwroughtcarbon,low-alloy,andalloysteels.Itisintendedthattheserecommendedgradecompositionlimitsbesuitableforadoptionbyotherstandardizationbodiesthatpreparestandardsforcarbon,low-alloy,andalloysteelproducts,includingdiscontinuedsteels.1.2Includedinthisguidearetherecommendationsfordeterminingthenumberofsignificantfiguresforspecifyingchemicalcomposition.1.3ThecarbonandalloysteelgradesinallstandardsoverseenbytheaforementionedASTMsubcommitteeshavebeenincluded,exceptthosegradesapplicabletorestrictedspecialenduses.1.4NotaddressedareminorcompositionmodificationsthataspecificASTMsubcommitteemayfindnecessarytoaccommodateeffectsofnormalprocessingortoenhancefabricabilitybytheproduceroruser,orboth.1.5Alsonotgenerallyaddressed(exceptwhereestablishedbyASTMsubcommittees)isacompleterationalizationofalllimits,especiallywheresuchwouldconflictwithlong-standingpracticesandisnotjustifiedbyspecialtechnicaleffect.1.6Thisguidedoesnotaddressdiscontinuedorformerlystandardsteelgrades.AlistingofsuchsteelgradescanbefoundinSAEJ1249.Alsoexcludedfromthisguidearecastmaterialsandweldingfillermetals.1.7In1995,theAISImadethedecisiontotransfertheresponsibilityofmaintainingitsnumberingsystemtotheSocietyofAutomotiveEngineers(SAE)forcarbonandalloysteels(SAEJ403andSAEJ404)andtoASTMInternationalforstainlesssteels(GuideA959andothers).Toinformusersofthisimportantevent,historicalinformationisincludedintheappendixofthisstandard.

It is recommended, therefore, that this specification not be specified for new designs.“NONCURRENT” refers to those materials which may have been widely used previously and which may be required for production or processing of existing designs in the future. The Aerospace Materials Division, however, does not recommend these specifications for future use in new designs.“NONCURRENT” specifications are available from SAE upon request.
